WEEKEND PREVIEW: WOODSMEN HIT THE ROAD FOR 2 AGAINST PEORIA MUSTANGS

The Wisconsin Woodsmen hit the road this weekend, squaring off against the Peoria Mustangs in a pair of NA3HL contests. Opening face-off on both Friday and Saturday evening at the Owens Center in Peoria, Ill., is slated for 6 p.m.

WOODSMEN SCOUTING REPORT:

  • FOR THE RECORD: The Woodsmen head into their weekend games against Peoria sitting at 4-4-1-1 overall.
  • LAST TIME OUT: Wisconsin came up empty in its two-game weekend series against league-leading Wausau last weekend, falling to the Cyclones 4-2 last Friday, before dropping a 7-1 decision the following evening.
  • HITTING THE ROAD: With their game at Wausau last Friday and two against Peoria this weekend, the Woodsmen are in the midst of playing three of four contests on the road. Wisconsin is sitting at 2-3-1-0 on its home ice, while going 2-1-0-1 away from the Tomah Ice Center. … The Woodsmen closed out the 2023-24 campaign with a 12-12-0-0 mark at the Tomah Ice Center.
  • WHITE-KNUCKLE RIDE: Six of the Woodsmen’s 10 games this season have been decided by one goal — including three that have gone into overtime, and one decided by a shootout.
  • HIGH-SCORING AFFAIRS. Wisconsin’s six goals in its 6-2 win over West Bend on Oct. 5 were a season-high. The Woodsmen have also scored five goals in a game twice, beating West Bend 5-3 on Sept. 21 and netting five in falling to Granite City 6-5 on Sept. 27. … On the flip side, Wausau’s seven goals in dealing the Woodsmen a 7-1 loss last Saturday were the most allowed by Wisconsin this season — and the most allowed in a non-shootout decision in program history. The Woodsmen dropped a 7-6, shootout decision to the Oregon Tradesmen on Nov. 17, 2023.
  • FRANCHISE FIRST: After going 0-9-0-1 in its 10 meetings against Wausau last season, the Woodsmen picked up their first-ever win against the Cyclones with a 3-2 victory on Sept. 20.
  • LIGHTING THE LAMP: Hugh Deinema, Nolan Mix, and Joshua Kauppinen share the team lead in goals with five each, two more than Tyler Osborne, Charles Murray, and Daniel Svozil. … Tristen May-Robinson and Viktor Budik have each scored twice this season, with Michael Anderson, Brandon Slasor, Maxim Lazo, Colton Holzer, and Pierson Zittel accounting for Wisconsin’s other five goals. … Deinema closed out the 2023-24 season as the Woodsmen’s leading goal scorer with 29 goals in 44 games.
  • DOUBLING UP: Murray and Mix each scored two goals in Wisconsin’s 6-2 victory over West Bend on Oct. 5 — marking the first time this season the Woodsmen have had a multiple-goal scorer.
  • STREAK-SNAPPER: Kauppinen had his season-opening four-game goal-scoring streak snapped in Wisconsin’s 6-5 overtime loss to Granite City on Sept. 27. … Deinema netted a goal in each of Wisconsin’s first three games.
  • LENDING A HELPING HAND: Deinema owns the team lead in assists with seven, followed by Mix and Budik with five each. Slasor, May-Robinson, and Lazo have each amassed four helpers, followed by Anderson, Murray, and Kauppinen with three each. … Budik led the Woodsmen with 30 assists a year ago, four more than Nicholas O’Brien.
  • POINT PRODUCERS: With his five goals and seven assists, Deinema sits atop the team’s points race with 12. Mix has also reached double figures in points with 10 (5 G, 5 A), with Kauppinen sitting third with eight (5 G, 3 A). Budik has collected seven points (2 G, 5 A), followed by Murray (3 G, 3 A) and May-Robinson (2 G, 4 A) with six points, and Slasor (1 G, 4 A), Lazo (1 G, 4 A), and Svozil (3 G, 2 A) with five points apiece. … Wisconsin closed out the 2023-24 season with two players boasting 40+ points — Deinema with 49 (29 G, 20 A) and Hunter Nelson with 46 (23 G, 23 A).
  • BETWEEN THE PIPES: Steven Kelley heads into this weekend’s matchups against Peoria sporting a 2.76 goals-against-average and a .915 save percentage. Lleyton Jaschke boasts a 5.23 GAA and an .852 save % and Otto Reinhart owns a 3.00 GAA and .896 save %.
  • SPECIAL TEAMS: After managing just one power-play goal in their first six contests, the Woodsmen have collected three PP goals in its last four games. Wisconsin is now 4-for-34 on the power play (14.7 %). On the flip side, Wisconsin has allowed eight power-play goals in its opponents’ 41 PP chances.
