WAUSAU, Wis. — The first period did in the Wisconsin Woodsmen Friday evening in a 5-3 loss
to the Wausau Cyclones.
In Saturday’s rematch, it was the third period that haunted the Woodsmen —‚ and the end
result was a second straight two-goal loss.
Wausau scored the game’s final two goals — both early in the third period — breaking a 1-1 tie
and leading the Cyclones to a weekend sweep of Wisconsin, 3-1, in an NA3HL matchup at
Marathon Arena.
After a scoreless first period, the Cyclones grabbed a 1-0 lead, thanks to a second-period tally
by Davis Polifka, his fifth goal of the season.
Vincent Greene pulled Wisconsin even with his ninth of the season just 1:11 into the game’s
final period — with Viktor Budi and Maxim Lazo collecting the assists — only to have Wausau
answer with goals by Cullen Grahek and Connor Dvorak less than two minutes apart to seal the
Cyclone victory.
Wisconsin held the lead in shots on goal, 36-34 — including 15-9 in the decisive third period
— but Cyclones’ goalie Tanner Bonjernoor was up to the task, kicking out 35 of the
Woodsmen’s 36 SOG. Steven Kelley suffered the loss between the pipes for the Woodsmen,
despite making 31 saves.
The Woodsmen are back in action with a pair of games next weekend. Wisconsin will play host
to league-leading West Bend Power in a 7:15 p.m. NA3HL contest on Friday at the Tomah Ice
Center, before returning to Marathon Park Arena in Wausau, Wis., for another 7:10 matchup
against the Wausau Cyclones.
