TOMAH, Wis. — The Wisconsin Woodsmen entered Friday’s NA3HL showdown with the Peoria
Mustangs looking to give their home fans a little belated Christmas present.
The Mustangs, however, appeared to be playing the role of the Grinch – at least for the first
two-and-a-half periods, that is.
Fortunately for Wisconsin, a late third-period rally allowed the Woodsmen to gift wrap that
home victory to its home faithful.
Nolan Mix netted his second of the game with less than seven minutes to play in regulation to
knot the game at 3-3 and Hugh Deinema added the game-winner with 2:54 on the clock to seal
the Woodsmen’s 5-4, come-from-behind victory at the Tomah Ice Center.
There was plenty of offensive action in the game’s opening period, with both teams finding the
back of the net twice. Maxim Lazo and Charles Murray lit the lamp for the Woodsmen, as the
two teams headed into the first intermission deadlocked at 2-2.
Mix tallied the first of his two goals at 13:49 of the middle frame to give Wisconsin a brief 3-2
lead, only to have Skyler Tompkins score twice in the final 3:03 of the period to put the Mustangs up 4-3 with 20 minutes to play.
And set up the Woodsmen’s late-game heroics.
Mix would tie the game at 4-4 with his 16th goal of the season and Deinema added his tea-
leading 17th of the year to seal Wisconsin’s second straight win.
Tristan May-Robinson delivered assists on three of Wisconsin’s five goals, while Viktor Budik
had a pair of assists and Steven Kelley picked up the win in goal, stopping 34 of the Mustangs’
38 shots on goal.
The Woodsmen and Mustangs will return to the Tomah Ice Center for the second game of their
two-game weekend series on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 7:15 p.m.
