WOODSMEN SUFFER SECOND STRAIGHT SHOOTOUT LOSS, FALLING TO TOROS 7-6

Dec 16, 2024

BLAINE, Minn. — New day … new team … new location … same result.

For the second time in the last three days, the Wisconsin Woodsmen found themselves on the
short end of a shootout loss. Mason City scored on both of its shootout attempts, while
Wisconsin came up empty on each of theirs, giving the Toros the 7-6 victory over the
Woodsmen Sunday during the opening day of the NA3HL Showcase at the National Sports
Center.

The Woodsmen — who dropped a 6-5 shootout decision to the Rochester Grizzlies on Friday,
found themselves staring at a 2-1 deficit after the game’s opening 20 minutes, as the Toros
sandwiched goals by Luca Salak and Sam Menne around Justin Funk’s first goal as a Woodsmen.

Tristen May-Robinson pulled Wisconsin even, 2-2, just 24 seconds into the second period, and
Caden McDonald added his first of the year six minutes later to give the Woodsmen their first
lead of the game, 3-2. Salak tallied his second of the game at 11:32, and TJ Gibson added
Mason City’s second goal of the frame to put the Toros up 4-3 with 20 minutes remaining in
regulation.

Wisconsin would outscore Mason City 3-2 over those final 20 minutes — including May-
Robinson’s second of the game and Maxim Lazo’s ninth of the season — to send the game into
overtime.

After a scoreless extra session, Lazo and Nolan Mix came up empty in the Woodsmen’s two
shootout attempts, while Sam Menne and Marcus Fritel both converted to give Mason City the
victory.

Lleyton Jaschke finished with 29 saves in goalf or the Woodsmen, while Drew Blake kicked out
21 of Wisconsin’s 27 shots on goal.

Wisconsin is back in action Monday evening, returning to the National Sports Center for a 6:45
p.m. NA3HL Showcase matchup against the Badlands Sabres.
